HERAT, Afghanistan, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The first trial freight train from Iran has arrived at Herat, a western Afghan province bordering Iran, the provincial government confirmed Thursday.
The train from Iran's Khaf carrying 500 metric tons of cement arrived in Ghoryan district of Herat on Wednesday after operational stages of the Herat-Khaf railway project were completed, the local government said in a statement.
Besides the freight train, a passenger train also reached Ghoryan bordering Iran on Wednesday, the statement said, adding that the first-ever rolling was experimental.
Construction of the third phase of the railway link has recently been completed and expected to be inaugurated in the next 10 days, the statement said.
After the construction of the fourth phase, the last part of the project, trains will reach a station in an industrial hub on the outskirts of the provincial capital Herat city, 640 km west of the Afghan capital Kabul.
