Bottled water a banned substance in Bundadoon
Kazakhstan News.Net Saturday 26th September, 2009
Bottled water has been officially banned by the Australian town of Bundadoon.
The ban, which commenced Saturday, followed a town hall meeting in July when Bundanoon residents voted 355 to 1 to ban bottled water.
At the end of Saturday, the town’s switchover will be complete. It will make Bundanoon, in the New South Wales Southern Highlands, the
first town in Australia, and possibly the world, to be bottled water free.
New high-tech filtered water stations have been installed in the main street and the local school. These will provide residents with filtered water on a complimentary basis. Chilled filtered water and 'bundy-on-tap' re-usable bottles will be available for purchase in stores.
One of the main drivers of the campaign to rid Australia of bottled water is Do something, not-for-profit organisation made up of members of the business community, to promote positive social and environmental change.
"Bottled water is an environmental menace and, when you consider all the facts, a sheer waste of money," the organisation says on its Web site.
"Bottled water hurts the hip pocket nerve. Financially, it just doesn’t make sense - some media commentators have gone so far as to call it a con. This year, Australians will spend half a billion dollars on bottled water. Every time a consumer buys bottled water, they are being price gouged. The charge for one litre of bottled water is up to 2,500 times the cost of tap water," Do Something says.
"Australia is drowning in a sea of plastic bottles, which create massive amounts of landfill and litter our streets. And significant resources are needed to bottle, transport and refrigerate water, especially if that water is imported from overseas."
"The manufacture of bottles for water squanders a non-renewable resource - oil," Do Something says. "The road and air miles generated by transporting bottled water are a significant generator of greenhouse gases." Email this story to a friend
