Indonesians suffer inter-island ferry tragedy

Kazakhstan News.Net
Monday 12th January, 2009

Indonesian rescue teams have been desperate to find more survivors from a ferry which was carrying 267 passengers and crew when it sank in stormy seas.

It is understood the ferry rolled and went down as it was being hit with waves of over 5 meters.

The health ministry's crisis centre officials said the sinking occurred as most people were sleeping.

The ferry was travelling from Pare-Pare on the west coast of Sulawesi island to the city of Samarinda on the Indonesian side of Borneo when it ran into high-sea storms.
